On 14-15 September 2017, Mae Fah Luang University played host to 23 university executives at the 3rd Annual Conference of the Sustainable University Network of Thailand (SUN Thailand).

In the conference, MFU President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanchai Sirichana gave a special lecture on ‘Looking Backward and Moving Forward: 19 Years of being a Sustainable University.’ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanchai stated that "The most significant factor for developing a sustainable university is the ‘Master Plan.’ Since the thoughts of people have changed through time, we have to clearly establish our own identity - our own core." Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanchai added that "Mae Fah Luang University was found with a reasonably planned vision which corresponds to three clear strategies: reforesting the university’s area, establishing the identity of MFU, and being the model of afforestation.  It has successfully implemented these three strategies."

Additionally, MFU has followed the teachings of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol on forestation that it is important to let the trees grow on their own. Therefore, the university has never interfered with the trees, but instead has let them grow up naturally on the campus. MFU also has followed the philosophy of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra to restore the forest. During the past 19 years, the university has set a policy of engaging students in a reforestation project on several occasions in order to promote a sense of care and responsibility for nature and the environment.

To be a sustainable university, MFU executives, lecturers, staff members, and students make efforts to plant and take care of almost every single tree on the campus. MFU wishes to mature along with its trees and will determinedly carry on the royal philosophy forever.
