On 27 September 2023, Times Higher Education (THE) released the World University Rankings 2024. Out of 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions, Mae Fah Luang University was ranked 5th in Thailand, joint 22nd in ASEAN and ranked in the 1001 - 1200 group in the latest THE 2024 World University Rankings.

The overall score of MFU was 28.3 – 32.6. Specially, the University performed the strongest in Thailand in the international outlook (54.0) for the fifth consecutive year.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. This year, the methodology for the 20th edition of the World University’s ranking has been significantly updated. The 2024 list expands the number of performance indicators from 13 to 18 grouped into five areas: Teaching 29.5% (the learning environment); Research environment 29% (volume, income and reputation); Research quality 30% (citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence); International outlook 7.5% (staff, students and research); and Industry 4% (income and patents).

The new indicators introduced in 2023 include research strength, research excellence, and research influence; and the number of patents. In the Research quality category, there are four indicators:
- Citation impact (15%): a score per institution calculated by Elsevier from 2015. Elsevier provide the mean Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) score.
- Research strength (5%): calculating the 75th percentile of field-weighted citation impact – a very robust guide to how strong typical research is.
- Research excellence (5%): looking at the number of research publications in the top 10 per cent for field-weighted citation impact worldwide – a guide to the amount of world-leading research at an institution. It is normalised by year, subject and staff numbers.
- Research influence (5%): measuring the importance of a paper by not only counting the number of citations but also taking into account the importance of the citing papers.

Moreover, Industry category consists of Industry income (2%): capturing knowledge-transfer activity by looking at how much research income an institution earns from industry (adjusted for PPP), scaled against the number of academic staff it employs; and Patents (2%): the number of patents from any source that cite research conducted by the university.

Altogether, the result reflects MFU’s exceptional achievements and strong determination to become a leading university in ASEAN with international recognition striving for well-being and sustainable future.
