MFU Recognized for Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

Mae Fah Luang University was ranked in the 401-600 tier in the world and ranked joint 11th in Thailand for the overall score out of 2,152 universities across 125 countries/regions (77 of which were Thai universities) in the latest THE Impact Rankings 2024, released on 12 June 2024. The result was officially announced in the Global Sustainable Development Congress 2024, held on 10 – 13 June 2024 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), Bangkok.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are a global measurement for assessing universities’ performance in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four broad areas: research, teaching, outreach and stewardship. The methodology for the overall Impact Rankings integrates scores across multiple SDGs to reflect overall performance and impact: SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (22%) and top three scores from other SDGs (each 26%).

For THE Impact Rankings 2024, Mae Fah Luang University submitted data on four SDGs including:
•    SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing (Ranked Joint 17th in Thailand) 
•    SDG 5: Gender Equality (Ranked 5th in Thailand)
•    SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities (Ranked Joint 6th in Thailand)
•    SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (Ranked Joint 12th in Thailand)

The University has received high scores in each aspect based on as following outstanding works:
1. SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being (Ranking: 801 – 1000, out of 1,498 institutions) evaluates universities’ effectiveness in promoting health and preventing disease across the global community. 
- MFU strives for well-being and sustainable future through promoting good health. The MFU Medical Center Hospital plays a vital role in offering the modern and high quality medical and healthcare services to all groups of people.

- MFU offers 21 study programmes in the fields of public health covering various disciplines that meet the need of labour market. Moreover, the Doctor of Medicine Programme has been recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education. 

- MFU has worked with several organisations in Thailand and abroad for developing the effective healthcare service system. This system will help people able to access the quality healthcare services and receive a holistic care. Additionally, MFU provides mobile medial and mobile dental units to give medical and dental services to people living in remote and rural areas.

2. SDG 5 Gender Equality (Ranking: 101 – 200, out of 1,361 institutions) evaluates universities’ contributions towards fostering gender equality and empowering women. 

- MFU determines to become the university of opportunity which provides education for everyone. In the academic year 2022, the total number of first-generation female students was 1,841 and the total number of female graduates was 28,394 (out of 39,529 graduates).  

- Most of MFU executive team members, lecturers and staff members are female, reflecting the environment inclusive for working and learning of all genders.

- MFU has promoted the gender equality on the campus by implementing gender equality measures such as student uniform, welfare and leave rights, and training and skill development.

3. SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities (Ranking: 201 – 300, out of 1,026 institutions) measures universities’ contributions to urban sustainability and community support. 

- MFU follows the aspiration of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra to restore forests and cultivate people by transforming a once degraded forest into a “University in the Park” and botanical garden with high biodiversity.

- MFU offers dormitories and other facilities for staff members, students and the general public such as canteens, library, hospital, sport complex and Mekong Basin Civilization Museum.

- MFU has worked with organisations in Chiang Rai province to drive economic growth and social development of Chiang Rai via research projects, academic services and various activities.

4. SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals (Ranking: 801 – 1000, out of 2,031 institutions) measures universities’ effectiveness in promoting global partnerships. 
- MFU has the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research which has been international recognised as the global hub for Mycology with research collaboration and a high number of citations from institutions around the world.

- MFU has worked with organisations in Thailand and abroad such as the Land Development Department, the Office of the National Water Resources, UN, WHO, WWF, and UNEP to solve environmental issues and promote sustainable development. The university also consistently hosted both national and international conferences as platforms for researchers and academics to exchange knowledge and build networks.

These rankings reflect MFU’s strong commitment to promote well-being and achieve a better and more sustainable future.
