The 45th Congress on Science and Technology of Thailand

On 7-9 October 2019, the Science Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King and Mae Fah Luang University co-hosted the 45th Congress on Science and Technology of Thailand (STT45) under the theme of “Seedling Innovation for Sustainable Development” at Mae Fah Luang University.

Mae Fah Luang University had the great honour of receiving Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who presided over the opening ceremony of STT45. After the opening ceremony, H.R.H. Princess Sirindhorn visited the Vanchai Sirichana Building, where she viewed the exhibitions of the Waste to Wealth Project and the Center of Excellence in Fungal Research. The exhibitions showed MFU’s determination and strong support of research in effective utilization of agricultural waste and fungal diversity in the fields of agriculture, medicine and industry.

The Congress on Science and Technology of Thailand (STT) is one of the largest annual national scientific meetings for national and international scientists and technologists and it emphasizes the development of young Thai scientists from various fields of science and technology.

This year, the highlight of the Congress were a keynote lecture on "Design and Applications of Selective Olefin Metathesis Catalysts" by Professor Robert H. Grubbs from the California Institute of Technology who won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and a plenary lecture on “Electrochemical Energy Storage Technologies: Now and Future” from Assistant Professor Dr. Montree Sawangphruk, the 2019 Outstanding Thai Scientist.

In collaboration with the STT 45, MFU’s schools and research units worked in unison to hold the 1st International Conference on Integrative Medicine 2019 and the Cosmetic and Beauty International Conference 2019 (CBIC 2019): Sustainable Cosmetic & Beauty Innovation.

Finally, there were special sessions on crystallography and cannabinoids: from biosynthesis to medical applications and panel discussions from several renowned invited speakers. The Congress also included oral and poster presentations in eight areas of Science and Technology, and workshops as well as exhibitions on advanced scientific and technological knowledge and instrumentation.

As an insitution of higher education, co-hosting this congress was a significant step for MFU in advancing the quality of teaching, establishing research collaboration, and serving the community around the world as a hub for research excellence and knowledge transfer in several fields.
