Mae Fah Luang University retains top spot for the 3rd consecutive year in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2022, released on 15 February 2022. This ranking listed the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. Out of 539 universities from 74 territories, up from 475 in 2021 (8 of which were Thai higher education institutions), Mae Fah Luang University was ranked 1st in Thailand, 8th in ASEAN and in the 201-250 band of the world (the same as 2021).

The THE Young University Rankings 2022 are based on the same metrics as THE World University Rankings to reflect young universities’ missions, with less emphasis on reputational surveys and more on factors such as research productivity, staff-student ratios, institutional income and doctoral education. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: Teaching 30% (the learning environment); Research 30% (volume, income and reputation); Citations 30% (research influence); International outlook 7.5% (staff, students and research); and Industry Income 2.5% (knowledge transfer).
