MFU and Consulate of India in Chiang Mai Partner for the International Day of Yoga

On 25 June 2024, Mae Fah Luang University’s the Global Relations Division and the Wellness Center, alongside the Consulate of India in Chiang Mai, organised the 10th International Day of Yoga at the Queen Sirikit 72nd Jubilee Sport Arena (Indoor Stadium), Mae Fah Luang University. The event welcomed over 200 participants including MFU faculty, staff, and students as well as representatives from organisations and yoga studios in Chiang Rai.

The event was held to celebrate the ancient Indian practice of yoga on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga. Celebrated across the world and recognised by the United Nations in 2014, it falls on June 21st of each year. It. Through yoga practice, the event also aimed to strengthen relations between Thailand and India and promote good health and well-being for all.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Assoc. Prof. Dr.Darunee Wattanasiriwech, Vice President of Mae Fah Luang University, and Mr. Ramji Ramaswamy, Vice Consul of India. The Vice Consul also awarded certificates to respected yoga instructors namely Mr. Anup Gupta from Ananda Yoga Shala, Ms. Thanyarat Haritphisut from Ananda Yoga Shala, Chatchada Sutalangka (Ph.D., PT) from the School of Integrative Medicine, Ms. Aumporn Kantiya from the Division of Building and Ground, Dr. Thapakorn Ruanjai from the School of Health Science, and Mrs. Thitakarn Wongsawas from MFU Wellness Center. Moreover, the Vice Consul and MFU Vice President lit an oil lamp, symbolising the start of this event, based on an Indian belief that light brings wisdom, brightness, energy, and success. 

Assoc. Prof. Dr.Darunee Wattanasiriwech stated in her welcome remarks that Mae Fah Luang University is proud to host this first-time event in celebration of yoga. With a strong emphasis on promoting good health and well-being for people of all ages in Thailand and the GMS, the university has committed to becoming a leading Regional Wellness and Healthcare Center. MFU believes yoga instills the qualities of discipline, focus, and mindfulness, empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives with a path to inner and outer peace.

Specially, the event provided Indian snacks and drinks supported by Accha Authentic Indian Cuisine for all participants. This allowed them to experience a taste of Indian culture alongside the yoga practice. Altogether, the event was a great success. All participants had a chance to immerse themselves fully in the yoga sessions, embrace teachings, and carry the essence of yoga into daily lives, which undoubtedly harmonizes their mind, body, and soul.
