MFU Provides Breast Cancer Screening and CPR Workshop to People in Bokeo Province, Laos

On 17 – 18 July 2024, a team of healthcare professionals from Mae Fah Luang University, including the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and MFU Medical Center Hospital, embarked on an academic service project at Bokeo Provincial Hospital in Laos. The team was led by Prof.Supakorn Rojananin, MD., Somprat Munjit, M.D., and Asst. Prof. Dr.Ratchanee Mitkitti. 

This initiative was part of MFU’s academic service programme focused on the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries. The team aimed to help reduce breast cancer mortality rates in Bokeo province by providing screenings to over 120 women. Additionally, the lecture and workshops on adults and children CPR were conducted for healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and public health officers. Participants also learned life-saving techniques during an emergency such as basic and advanced life support.

Mae Fah Luang University envisions becoming a leading university in ASEAN with international recognition striving for well-being and sustainable future, serving as a medical education hub for in the GMS. This cross-border project aligns with this vision by improving well-being of people in the region.  

The Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) shares a border with Chiang Rai Province, particularly Bokeo Province, which is located opposite Chiang Khong District. This project marks the beginning of a potential partnership with Bokeo Provincial Hospital. It could serve as a referral hospital for Mae Fah Luang University Medical Center Hospital and a study site for third-year medical students to study health problems and systems of neighboring countries in the Mekong sub-region. 

This collaborative effort not only improved the skills of healthcare professionals in Bokeo province but also facilitated knowledge exchange between the two countries. This exchange is expected to foster good relations and a strong healthcare and educational network between Thailand and Laos.
