Mae Fah Luang University Shines in THE Impact Rankings 2025, Contributing SDGs

Mae Fah Luang University has been ranked in the 801 – 1000 range globally, with an overall score of 60.9–65.5, in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025. The rankings, released on 18 June 2025, assesses 2,526 universities from 130 countries or territories based on their progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The methodology for the overall Impact Rankings integrates scores across multiple SDGs to reflect overall performance and impact: SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (22%) and top three scores from other SDGs (each 26%).

In 2025, Mae Fah Luang University submitted data for four SDGs, demonstrating its strong commitment to sustainable development: 
•    SDG 5 Gender Equality (Ranked joint 7th in Thailand with a score of 63.2 – 67.8)
•    SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities (Ranked joint 21st in Thailand with a score of 43.6 – 53.0) 
•    SDG 3 Good Health and Wellbeing (Ranked joint 17th in Thailand with a score of 45.1 – 50.5) 
•    SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals (Ranked joint 47th in Thailand with a score of score 44.8 – 58.0) 

The significant and outstanding initiatives in each SDG are as follows:
SDG 5: Gender Equality
Global Ranking: 101-200 (Total Institutions: 1,559)
•    As a university of opportunity, MFU welcomed 1,783 first-generation female students in the academic year 2023, promoting educational access for all. Out of 42,633 graduates, 30,658 are female.
•    Women play significant roles at MFU across all levels—executive, academic, and administrative, reflecting a supportive environment for learning and working for all genders.
•    MFU promotes gender equality through inclusive welfare policies, training programmes, and equality-driven institutional policies.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Global Ranking: 401-600 (Total Institutions: 1,154)
•    MFU is committed to fulfilling the royal aspiration of “Restore Forests, Cultivate People,” initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra. This involves restoring degraded forests and cultivating a biodiversity-rich environment within the university’s botanical garden.
•    The university has developed various facilities to support the well-being of students and staff, such as canteens, libraries, hospitals, dental clinics, a counselling service center, sports complex, and the Mekong Basin Civilization Museum. These facilities are also open for public use.
•    MFU plays a significant role in the socio-economic development of Chiang Rai Province through research, academic services, and collaboration with local organisations to promote sustainable city and community development.

SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing
Global Ranking: 801 - 1000 (Total Institutions: 1,788)
•    MFU established the Mae Fah Luang University Medical Center to provide high-quality, modern healthcare services accessible to the general public.
•    The university offers 24 programmes in health sciences, including a Doctor of Medicine Programme accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
•    MFU collaborates with various national and international organisations to enhance the efficiency of healthcare systems, ensuring equitable access to comprehensive healthcare services. Outreach programmes, such as mobile medical and dental clinics, are also conducted to serve remote communities.

SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals 
Global Ranking: 1001-1500 (Total Institutions: 2,389) 
•    The Centre of Excellence in Fungal Research (CEFR) at Mae Fah Luang University is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading centers in mycology, known for its outstanding research output and collaboration with global institutions.
•    MFU has established partnerships with both domestic and international organisations, such as the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), the United Nations, WHO, WWF, and UNEP. The university also regularly hosts national and international academic conferences.
