Education as Foundation: MFU's Four-Cluster Event Strengthens Thailand-China Partnership

On 26 September 2025, Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) hosted a series of academic activities, led by its Schools and their Chinese partner universities, as parts of celebratory events for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand and the 27th anniversary of Mae Fah Luang University. The activities were divided into four main clusters:

1. Science and Technology Cluster: Panel Discussion on Herbal Medicine and Fungi: Thai-Chinese Collaboration in Research and Innovation for Health and Well-being organised by the School of Science

This panel focused on presenting the latest research findings, advances in extraction and processing technologies from natural resources, as well as the exchange of knowledge on medicinal plants and fungi. The aim was to contribute to the development of valuable health products and to enhance the quality of life of people in both Thailand and China.

The discussion brought together distinguished international experts in medicinal plants and fungi from Thailand and China, including:
•    Prof. Wenbin Li, MD, Ph.D., Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China
•    Prof. Zhao Qi, Ph.D., Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China
•    Assoc. Prof. Tao Wei, Ph.D., South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China
•    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rawiwan Charoensup, Medicinal Plant Innovation Center and School of Integrative Medicine, Mae Fah Luang University
•    Asst. Prof. Dr. Sunita Chamyuang, School of Science, Mae Fah Luang University
•    Dr. Naritsada Thongklang, School of Science, Mae Fah Luang University
The session was moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Prapassorn Damrungkul-Ungwanichpan, School of Science, Mae Fah Luang University.

2. Humanities and Social Sciences Cluster: Academic Seminar: “Language as a Bond – China and Thailand as One Family” organised by the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Sinology

The seminar aimed to promote cooperation in Thai language teaching for Chinese learners and Chinese language teaching for Thai learners. The seminar invited experts to share their knowledge, experiences, and effective teaching approaches, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Qin Xiuhong from Guangxi Minzu University, Dr. Phatthira Wiphawaphinyo from the School of Liberal Arts, Ms. Noppakao Saekhow and Ms. Qian Li from the School of Sinology.

This activity contributed to enhancing the quality of Thai and Chinese language instruction in different contexts, while also serving as a platform for exchanging ideas and building collaborative networks among stakeholders

3. Health Science Cluster: 

  • Academic Seminar: “Collection and Documentation of Traditional Dai Medical Wisdom” organised by the School of Integrative Medicine in collaboration with Yunnan University of Chinese Medical 

The event was honoured by the presence of Dr. Li Qiongchao, Ph.D. from Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine, who delivered a lecture and shared knowledge on Dai traditional medicine.

  • Demonstration and Exhibition of Traditional Dai Medicine (The Wonders of Dai Traditional Medicine) organised by the School of Integrative Medicine

These activities aimed to promote and strengthen academic collaboration with international institutions, while serving as a platform for the exchange of knowledge in traditional medicine, particularly Dai medicine from Yunnan Province, China.

4. Business Management, Trade, Investment, and Economic Cluster:

  • “Sino-Thai Business Negotiation” Workshop organised by the School of Management and the School of Law 

Aiming to improve communication and business negotiation skills while increasing understanding of Chinese business culture, the workshop featured a special lecture on “Laws and Regulations: Key Factors for Successful Thai–Chinese Business Negotiations,” delivered by Dr. Natthaporn Kongjindamunee, Assistant Manager from China Certification & Inspection Group (CCIC Thailand).

  • Exhibition Booths by Chiang Rai Entrepreneurs and Business Plan Consultation Services by lecturers from the School of Management

These academic activities successfully served as a platform for researchers, lecturers, students, and the community to exchange perspectives, learn from best practices, and explore potential for future collaboration and mutual development.    

Apart from the activities on 26 September, Mae Fah Luang University, in collaboration with public and private partners, has organised a series of activities throughout the year 2025 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. These activities focused on academic exchange, as well as student and staff mobility, in order to foster mutual understanding and cooperation in various dimensions. The celebrations also serve as an important opportunity to reflect on the University’s role as a key contributor to Thai–Chinese cooperation at the local, regional, and national levels and to reaffirm its commitment to jointly shape new directions and foster innovative collaborations that address global challenges and respond to the rapidly changing dynamics of the Greater Mekong Subregion—paving the way toward the sustainable development of a shared future community.
