On 18 September 2020, Ms. Sitang Kongkratoke, a lecturer at the School of Health Science and a researcher of the Circular Economy for Waste-free Thailand (CEWT) Research Center participated in the online 31st JSMCWM (Japan Society of Material Cycles and Waste Management) Annual Meeting International Symposium: "Sound Waste Management in response to the Pandemic of COVID-19" along with representatives from Nepal, Papua New Guinea, China, Korea and Japan.
Ms. Sitang Kongkratoke presented a report on “Waste Management according to COVID-19 in Thailand” especially on infectious waste management in healthcare institutes. With her report, Ms. Kongkratoke had been contacted from the NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) for an interview on the “Live from Bangkok” session in the NHK WORLD-JAPAN programme. In Thailand, the number of infectious waste produced in community level during the COVID-19 is rising. Therefore, the CEWT at MFU has been developing a new technology called D-Germ: an infectious waste management application which is used on a trial basis to share information on the volume and location of medical waste in order to safely collect and dispose of medical waste.
On the whole, participation in the international symposium on waste management shows MFU’s efforts to constructively engage in regional cooperation in order to promote waste treatment and enhance safety for people in region and beyond.
